JOB TITLE: Business Intelligence Manager 

REPORTING TO: Director of Change Delivery

ROLE PURPOSE: Responsible for the operation of Business Intelligence (BI) and Analytics across House of Fraser. As the organisational model evolves and the business transitions to a new operating model the role of data (structured and unstructured) and business intelligence becomes critical to the future success of the business. The role is accountable for managing the end to end BI. In addition, it will include the evolution of the Business Intelligence competency centre as well as BAU reporting, but stretching into Analytics in the future.


Strategy & Planning

  • Lead the development of architecture for complex BI systems, ensuring consistency with specified requirements agreed with both external, and internal customers in conjunction with the Architecture & Assurance Discipline.
  • Establish policy and strategy for the selection of BI architecture components, and co-ordinates design activities, promoting the discipline to promote consistency
  • Develop a well-defined set of requirements as input into the architecture creation process. Prerequisite is that the requirements have been documented and approved by the customer
  • Provide guidance into the project planning stage for the component cost estimates as defined by the new architecture
  • Ensure that the project level architecture implemented, meets the project business objectives and technical requirements

BI Solution Architecture

  • Responsible for the balance between functional, service quality and system management requirements across HoF
  • Architect, document and design solutions, in conjunction with the Architecture & Assurance function, to complex business requirements in accordance with enterprise application and technology roadmaps, principles, standards and guidelines
  • Identify, discuss and decide on exceptions to Enterprise Architecture principles and standards during the course of solution design and development; working in conjunction with Architecture & Assurance to act as the design authority that defines best practice
  • Design and implement the Architecture Standards & Principles in relation to solutions deployed

Business Intelligence Operations and Service

  • Ensure the smooth running of the Business Intelligence team working closely with the Director of Service and Operations to ensure consistent and accurate reporting solutions.
  • Lead a small team of BI professionals to ensure day to day operations running at optimum and regular service improvement activities are monitored and reviewed.

Communication & Relationships

  • Provide leadership and expertise to multiple teams in broad technical areas on complex organisation wide projects
  • Principle point of escalation for BI solution driven architecture and BI operational matters within assigned business areas
  • Collaborate, engage with assigned business area teams to understand the business and commercial landscape within which the BI solution and Operations will be used
  • Work closely with assigned business areas on their solution designs to ensure effective translation of the architecture into solutions


  • Demonstrable knowledge of the Business Intelligence and retail market place & trends
  • Experience of a number of technology platforms (e.g. not just a single technology stack) with specific depth of experience in current HOF BI landscape; MicroStrategy, Oracle and Azure
  • Significant experience of designing solutions that operate on the core technologies in use within HoF
  • Proven ability to deliver flexible, reliable, supportable, cost effective (packaged and bespoke) IT solutions
  • Demonstrable experience in IT Industry standards, services, design, architecture principles design, architecture views and viewpoint design, building block design, solutions modelling and systems behaviour.
  • Set the principals and standards for Business Intelligence and Analytics
  • Tactical architect for BI programmes as well as strategic change consultant, defining strategies for data quality, data governance, data management, master data management, reporting and embracing a future analytics state incorporating the power of big data technologies and approaches
  • Manage Direct and matrix managed teams as part of change programmes
  • Experience of working with third party suppliers; exposure to industry-standard commercial processes and practices
  • Clear understanding of the key differences between COTS and bespoke solutions
  • Experienced in both agile and waterfall management practices within the full BI software development lifecycle
  • Exposure to IT governance structures
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage and communicate with senior business-leaders, IT Leadership and wider IT team
