JOB TITLE: Senior Solution Architect

REPORTING TO: Principal Domain Architect

ROLE PURPOSE: Responsible for developing the roadmap of change projects for the assigned business areas, creating solution architectures for complex programmes and projects, support the development of the Enterprise Architecture, Business Technology Roadmap and to be the design authority on projects ensuring adherence to the Enterprise Architecture and the BT Roadmap.


Strategy & Planning

  • Lead the development of architecture for complex systems, ensuring consistency with specified requirements agreed with both external, and internal customers
  • Establish policy and strategy for the selection of systems architecture components, and co-ordinate design activities, promoting the discipline to promote consistency
  • Provide guidance into the project planning stage for the component cost estimates as defined by the new architecture
  • Ensure that the project level architecture implemented, meets the project business objectives and technical requirements
  • Ensure there are a well-defined set of requirements as input into the architecture creation process. Prerequisite is that the requirements have been documented and approved by the customer

Solution Architecture

  • Architect, document and design solutions to complex business requirements in accordance with enterprise application and technology roadmaps, principles, standards and guidelines
  • Identify, discuss and decide on exceptions to Enterprise Architecture principles and standards during the course of solution design and development; being the design authority that defines best practice
  • Design and implement the Architecture Standards & Principles in relation to solutions deployed

Solution Quality Assurance & Testing

  • Regularly analyse the current environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement
  • Provide assurance for High and Low level technical and architectural documentation, this includes: applications design and definition documents, infrastructure documents (sizing, reference architectures, growth estimates, throughput etc.) and live migration documents and acceptance into live service and the clear definition of external and internal interfaces to other products and services
  • Perform the design authority role on projects ensuring that the detailed designs and solutions delivered align to the solution architecture manage and resolving any design issues as they arise

Communication & Relationships

  • Provide leadership and expertise to multiple teams (internal and external) in broad technical areas on complex organisation wide projects
  • Principle point of escalation for solution driven architecture matters within assigned business areas
  • Collaborate, engage with assigned business area teams to understand the business and commercial landscape within which the solution will be used
  • Work closely with assigned business areas on their solution designs to ensure effective translation of the architecture into solutions
  • Work in partnership with assigned business areas in designing the approach for middleware projects, including selection of technologies, setting technical directions, estimating/planning and directing developers


  • Demonstrable knowledge of the IT and retail marketplace & trends, specifically with ecommerce and multichannel technologies
  • Experience of a number of technology platforms (e.g. not just a single technology stack) including one or many of the following in the Multi Cannel domain:
    • Web UI technologies (Microsoft .NET, JavaScript, HTML, CSS etc.)
    • Commerce (SAP Hybris, IBM WebSphere Commerce, etc.)
    • Order Management (IBM Sterling Commerce)
    • Content Management (SDL Tridion, Adobe AEM etc.)
    • Search (Fred Hopper, Endecca etc.)
    • Integration (Mulesoft, IBM WebSphere, Oracle Fusion etc.)
  • Significant experience of designing solutions that operate on the core technologies in use within HoF
  • Proven ability to deliver flexible, reliable, supportable, cost effective (packaged and bespoke) IT solutions
  • Demonstrable experience in IT Industry standards, services, design, architecture principles design, architecture views and viewpoint design, building block design, solutions modelling and systems behaviour
  • Good experience of IT Architecture (and underlying frameworks such as TOGAF) including the development (and ensuring adherence to) Architecture principles and standards.
  • Proficient in methods and techniques for structured reviews, including reviews of non-functional requirements, technical documents, test plans, business cases and other key deliverables.  
  • Physical/virtualised on premise, managed service provider (MSP) and cloud (IAAS, PAAS and SAAS) solution architectures (Microsoft Azure, AWS etc.)
  • Strong modelling skills in UML (BPMN beneficial) using a standard modelling tool (Sparx Enterprise Architect beneficial)
  • Experience of working with third party suppliers; exposure to industry-standard commercial processes and practices
  • Proven track record of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and its application in a business (non-technical) context; clear understanding of the differences between SOA and its implementation
  • Clear understanding of the key differences between COTS and bespoke solutions
  • Experienced in both agile and waterfall management practices within the full software development lifecycle
  • Exposure to IT governance structures
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage and communicate with senior business-leaders, the Business Technology Leadership and wider Business Technology team
